Fiber Optic Cabling

Purpose

The fiber optic training program is designed for students seeking career-oriented, entry-level specialist skills in fiber optic networks. Target students will include interested individuals and cabling/IT professionals who want to enhance their cabling skills by moving to fiber from copper. These students will be prepared for jobs in the cabling industry in TV, data, video and voice networks.

Program Description

This program has been designed with input from industry professionals for entry level jobs in fiber optic cabling and provides students with a theoretical and hands-on knowledge of Fiber Optics. Students will learn about the elements of fiber optic systems including light waves and their propagation, calculating a system loss budget, fiber optic cabling, sources and termination in commercial and residential topologies using sophisticated electronic equipment. Placement of fiber, testing and troubleshooting will also be covered. Each student will be provided with a personal fiber optic kit. On successful graduation students will be awarded NCS-Fiber certification. This is a 30-hour program that is usually offered for 5 weeks two evenings a week for 3 hours each evening.

Primary Goals

The primary goals of this program include

  • Learn about fiber optic concepts and cabling, optical sources and detectors.
  • Learn and practice fiber optic cabling termination.
  • Identification of fiber optic system components.
  • Commercial and residential cabling standards and topologies.

Consideration for Industry Certification and Articulation

The program prepares a student for the C-Tech Fiber Cabling Certification.

PREREQUISITE: There are no pre-requisites for the program.

Recognition of Completion: Students who successfully complete this program receive a Network Cabling Specialist—Fiber Certificate.
