This course is a chronological survey of the history of African Americans from their African beginnings through their progress in the twenty-first century. Five units in the history of African Americans will be emphasized - becoming African American, antebellum black life, the Civil War and Reconstruction, White Supremacy and legalized injustice, the Civil Rights movement through the modern era. This course meets General Education Core Goal 12: Global Perspectives and Diversity and Core Goal 13: Ethical Reasoning and Behavior.
