Montco sparks a passion for science

After watching his older brothers graduate from college heavily in debt, Dolan Stimson knew that he wanted his education to be affordable. He also wanted to transfer easily and complete a B.S. degree. Montco met his criteria and more.

In 2015 Dolan earned an A.S. in secondary education from Montco and switched his career path from teaching chemistry to learning more about science in general. Possibly he'd become a pharmacist. Debt-free and enthusiastic about Montco's science offerings, he enrolled in the Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing program.

"Originally, I chose biotechnology to diversify myself as a future pharmacist, but it ended up growing into a passion that I knew I had to follow. At first what I was learning sounded like science fiction straight out of a book, but then you get working in labs and realize that this is reality! It was so fascinating, I found myself researching biotechnology articles outside of school," say Dolan, who earned an A.S. in biotech from Montco in 2017.

The curriculum I was taught at Montco in the biotech/biomanufacturing program helped me have a better understanding of how GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) works.

While taking his first biotechnology class, Dolan participated in a "lunch and learn" session with GlaxoSmithKline. That event led him to his current position as an apprentice Chemical Compound Operator at GSK.

"The curriculum I was taught at Montco in the biotech/biomanufacturing program helped me have a better understanding of how GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) works, understanding batch records, and have good documentation principles that are absolutely necessary when working anywhere in pharma," he says.

Dolan is also pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Product Development at West Chester University. Ultimately, he would like to earn a Ph.D. in biochemistry or genetics.
