The first of these scholarships would be established by Dr. Bastecki-Perez and her husband, Santos Perez, who felt personally inspired to help students facing barriers. As first-generation college students themselves, Dr. Bastecki-Perez and Mr. Perez understood the struggles these students, and students dealing with other barriers, faced while on their higher education journey.

Their investment, combined with the opportunity to honor the College’s leader while impacting students’ lives, inspired more than just five additional sponsors to join in this initiative. By the end of the 2021 Fiscal Year, ten total scholarships were established through sponsorship commitments.

These scholarships will support students who represent the resilience of our President, Dr. Bastecki-Perez, by pursuing their education despite barriers they may be facing, including being first-generation students, single parents, in need of financial assistance, and more. As endowed funds, these scholarships will impact students at Montgomery County Community College in perpetuity.
