Two veteran, Montgomery County Community College STEM students recently received a $5,000 scholarship from ITServe Alliance to support their education.
Pennsylvania Army National Guard member Oscar Amador and U.S. Air Force veteran Heber
Herrera were named recipients of the ITServe Alliance CSR-Philadelphia Chapter STEM
Scholarship through the Montgomery County Community College (PA) Legacy Fund. Each
received $2,500 for the fall 2026 and spring 2027 semesters, which support students
pursuing degrees in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.
ITServe Alliance’s mission is “To empower local communities through STEM advocacy, educating the underprivileged, feeding the hungry, supporting our veterans and first responders, and recognizing our community heroes.”
Amador, 25, of Souderton, is earning an AS degree in Life Sciences with the intent of one day becoming a forensic scientist. He said the scholarship
has decreased his financial stress.
“Previously, I had been working a full-time job as a lawn service technician,” he said, “so having that extra money going towards paying my tuition will allow me to accrue more savings and emergency funds.”
The scholarship would also give him financial stability to take time from work to pursue internship and job shadowing opportunities.
Herrera, 29, of East Norriton, is earning an AS degree in Engineering Science - Mechanical.
“I am sincerely honored and grateful to have been selected as a recipient of the scholarship,” he said. “Thank you for your generous support and for investing in my education and future.”
Receiving this scholarship, he said, eases his financial burden in pursuit of his
degree, and allows him to focus more on his studies and the continuous work toward
his academic and career goals. He plans to transfer to Drexel University to continue
studying mechanical engineering.
“Your generosity makes a meaningful difference, and I truly appreciate the confidence you have placed in me,” he said. “I am committed to making the most of this opportunity and hope to one day be in a position to give back and support others in the same way.”
