Dual Enrollment Program Overview
Dual Enrollment at Montco provides the opportunity for qualified high school students to get a head start on their college careers through dual enrollment courses.
Benefits of Early College Programs
- Prepares students for the academic rigors of college by exposing them to an intense curriculum that research has found to promote baccalaureate degree attainment.
- Lowers the cost of postsecondary education for students by enabling them to earn transferable college credit while still in High School and shortening their time to degree completion.
- Gives students first-hand experience with the academic and social skills they will need to succeed in college through their participation in college-level courses.
- Provides curricular options for students, should the High School wish to offer a wider variety of electives.
- Reassures parents of their student’s ability to handle college-level work and assume academic responsibilities.
- Promotes a healthy and productive interaction between the High School and Montco.
- Provides enhanced High School - community relations and for enhanced College - community relations.
Dual Enrollment vs. Dual Credit
For select partner schools, students can take classes at their high school, on campus, or online and receive dual credit for both high school requirements and college credit.
Dual Credit classes taught at the High School are taught by Montco-certified High School teachers, who have met specific discipline requirements to teach a Dual Credit course.
Partner High Schools
Partner High Schools agree to advertise the opportunity and advise students about early college courses at Montco. This agreement also provides discounted tuition for students living outside the county.
For a list of our current partner schools please visit: mc3.edu/de-partners
If you would like to become a Montco Partner, please email DualEnrollment@mc3.edu.
Eligibility Requirements
- The High School student must be 15 years old or older. Exceptions may be made for certain high-achieving students.
- The participating student must submit a signed Release Form (signed by a parent/guardian and the student) with registration
- High School students must meet all College prerequisites for the classes intended for enrollment.
- The student has demonstrated readiness for college-level coursework in the intended subject of study, as determined by Montco.
- Montco does not offer Placement Testing for Reading, Writing, or Math. Montco practices
holistic advising, where students are placed in courses based on meeting prerequisites
for each course they register for. This is determined by evaluation of the high school
transcript.
- Additional standardized test scores may be requested, if prerequisites are not clearly met by transcript evaluation alone.
- Biology placement testing is available for students to take one time. More information about the biology placement assessment can be found here.
College Transcript
Montco will award postsecondary credit to students who successfully complete courses and transcript this credit in a manner identical to other students who take a course at this institution.
If a Dual Enrollment student becomes a regularly enrolled student at Montco following graduation from the High School, Montco will recognize those credits as applying to the student’s degree requirements as it would for any regularly enrolled postsecondary student who took the courses.
Becoming a Dual Enrollment Student
We recommend students visit MC3.edu/DE for steps to becoming a Dual Enrollment student.
- The first step for students is to submit an application to Montco. It is important
that they choose "High School Dual Enrollment" as their program of study. Completing
the application linked at MC3.edu/DE will automatically populate this field.
Once the student’s application is submitted, they will receive a confirmation email with their new student ID number within 24–48 hours. If they do not receive their student ID within 48 hours, please contact our IT Support Services for assistance. - The next step is to register for classes. Using the links on our Dual Enrollment webpage, students can choose the specific form to register for classes at their High School or at the College. These are two different forms depending on where the student intends to take classes. If they are doing both, they will submit one form for their classes at the High School and a separate form for classes at the College.
- The final step is for the parent or guardian to submit the parent release form(s). There will be one release form for each registration form submitted. Students will not be registered for their courses until this form is complete.
