Going Beyond Grades: Using Assessment to Support Student Success
Rachel Ascione, PsyD
Senior Lecturer, Psychology
Faculty often encounter students whose academic performance does not align with their
ability or effort, with concerns frequently attributed to motivation or time management
rather than underlying cognitive, emotional, or learning factors. This workshop introduces
psychological assessment as an evidence-based tool for coordinated student support
across faculty, disability services, counseling centers, and academic support offices.
The session clarifies the role of assessment in higher education and offers practical
strategies and language for supporting students within appropriate professional boundaries.
Aligned with the conference theme “Lead with Unity, Act With Purpose,” the workshop emphasizes shared responsibility in supporting diverse learners.
