Montgomery County Community College’s Legislator-in-Residence Program is underway for the fall semester, starting with visits from State  Representative Tim Briggs on Oct. 3; Representative Tracy Pennycuick, Oct. 4; Representative Liz Hanbidge, Oct. 11;  and State Senator Amanda Cappelletti, Oct. 12.

This program, now in its fifth year, allows students in MCCC’s American National Government classes to hear firsthand what it is like to serve as an elected official. Each year, several local and state officials from Montgomery County visit the classroom and talk about their backgrounds, how they became involved in public service and their experience serving in this role.

As part of the course, students research the backgrounds and positions of the elected officials, including some of their key issues and legislation, and then craft questions for them to answer during their visits. Afterward, students analyze the discussions and write essays about which elected officials they believe embody “a servant of the people.”

The schedule for the fall semester also includes State Representative Joe Ciresi on Oct. 20; Representative Steve Malagari, Nov. 1; Representative Mary Jo Daley,  Nov. 7; Representative Napoleon Nelson, Nov. 10; and Representative Nancy Guenst, Nov. 29.
