Montgomery County Community College is highlighting the talent of its art students at its 14th Annual MCCC Student Exhibition and Competition, which opened Tuesday, April 9, and continues through April 26 at the Fine Arts Gallery, North Hall, 16 High Street, Pottstown.

The exhibition features original art created by students of the MCCC Fine Arts Program and includes a full-range of media, including photography, sculptures, drawings and mixed media. The show was juried by Leslie Ehrin, a fine artist, author and educator, and the awards were sponsored by the Pottstown Area Artists Guild.

This year’s Best in Show winner was Rose Cushwa of Douglassville for her oil painting “Running Down a Dream.” She received $150 in prize money from the Bella Shen and Lucie S. Lee Art Award through the College’s Foundation.

Maggie Anderson was chosen for Best in Painting for her oil painting “5779,” and Yvonne Holbert of Pottstown was chosen for Best in Drawing for her charcoal drawing, “Converse and Doc Martens.” Cushwa was also selected for the Pottstown Area Artists Guild Juror’s Choice Award for her charcoal drawing, “Daisy.” Shamyra Woodlin of Pottstown received an Honorable Mention for her oil painting, “Still Life.”

Prizes for the student winners were generously donated by North Penn Art, Veteran’s Island Project, an anonymous sponsor and the Pottstown Area Artists Guild.

MCCC’s Fine Art Program provides the foundation studies and studio expertise that parallels the first two years of study at a four-year college and enables students to develop their skills and produce a portfolio in the visual arts to obtain employment after earning an associate’s degree. Students may concentrate their studies in subjects including Animation, Ceramics, Drawing, Graphic Design, Illustration, Painting, Photography, Printmaking or Sculpture.

The Fine Arts Gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-9:30 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Closed weekends.
