Lack of proper dental care and resulting medical issues led to a degree in dental hygiene.

While growing up in South Korea, Rebekah Kim lacked proper dental care and suffered from numerous dental problems as a result.

Following her relocation to the United States 13 years ago, Kim, who had worked as a teacher in her native country, began thinking about changing careers. In 2014, the mother of four enrolled at Montgomery County Community College to pursue an associate degree in Dental Hygiene.

She was propelled to pursue a career in this field by her own dental hygiene hardships, but at the same time, the role of a dental hygienist fits her personality and gives her an outlet to become a “positive influence on a patient’s life.”

Kim, of Blue Bell, graduated in May 2018. Reflecting on her time at the College, Kim said Montco’s flexibility, coupled with her husband’s willingness to help their kids with homework and travel to their activities allowed her to complete the necessary courses and clinical work leading up to her degree.

I couldn’t take the classes full-time, so each semester I took a couple of classes,” she said. I struggled a lot, but thankfully my husband’s work schedule was flexible.

Her hard work was recognized when she received the Sigma Phi Alpha Dental Hygiene Honor Society award for her high grades, great character and promising potential as a dental hygienist. She also received the Pennsylvania Student Members of the American Dental Hygienists Association Award.

“I feel very honored to receive two awards,” Kim said.

Kim enjoyed her studies at Montco and learned a great deal from the College’s dedicated professors, whom she described as “very passionate, willing to help and professional.”

Eventually, Kim hopes to earn a master’s degree in either dental hygiene or public health. In the meantime, she will take the national board exam and hopes to begin working in a dental practice soon after.

She credits the college with helping her discover her next career.

“I wanted to investigate the world and see what I could do,” Kim said. “I’m so happy that I did and that I made it.”

Her professors told her throughout her college journey that she was a hard worker and a kind person, helping build her confidence.

“I’m so excited and very appreciative,” she said. “I have the knowledge and skill to do something positive for this community.”
