The purpose of a concussion protocol is to give students guidance for managing how to report Traumatic Brain Injuries, specifically concussions, to allow for a safe transition back into the classroom. This protocol will provide students with reasonable and appropriate academic accommodations in a timely manner.

A student who sustains a possible concussion should be seen by a qualified healthcare provider experienced in evaluating concussions. The qualified healthcare provider should offer guidance about when it is safe for a student to return to school and appropriate levels of cognitive and physical activity.

  • Consult with a qualified medical provider and attain required documentation.
  • Medical documentation can be submitted via a Secure File Transfer (https://sft.mc3.edu/filedrop/disabilities)
  1. Medical provider can complete: Concussion Documentation Form
  2. Documentation should include:
    1. Test performed and date of evaluation
    2. Date of sustained concussion
    3. Severity of symptoms the student is experiencing
    4. Anticipated timeframe of restrictions and recommendations
    5. List the physician follow up appointment if accommodations need to continue
    6. If symptoms increase or change, updated information will be needed from the medical provider.
  • Students should email their instructors about their attendance in class.
  • Schedule a meeting with the Office of Disability Services to notify them of the injury, submit required documentation and discuss accommodations.
  • Letters of accommodation will be emailed to the students and their instructors.

Note: MCCC student‑athletes who sustain a concussion during an athletic event will work directly with the athletic trainer, who will coordinate with the Office of Disability Services if support is needed. All other concussion related injuries should follow the procedures outlined above.
